Scientists at IBM Research have established method to integrate silicon photonic chips with processor in same package, avoiding need for transceiver assemblies. Method is scalable and enables simultaneous interfacing of many optical connections between silicon photonic chip and system. New technique, which will be presented March 25 at OFC Conference and Exposition, should lower cost and increase performance, energy efficiency, and size of future data centers, supercomputers, and cloud systems.

Silicon Photonic Switch to be presented at OFC 2015.
2015-03-19 13:31:08| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Researchers at University of California, Berkeley have developed a novel silicon photonic switch, which is the largest-scale and lowest-energy loss switch reported to date. It features switching time of sub-micro seconds and broad bandwidth of hundreds of nanometers. Measuring 1 x 1 cm, switch has 50 input and 50 output channels, for total of 2,500 switching elements. Researchers will present switching innovation on March 23, 2015 during Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition.
