Source: U.S. Department of Agriculture Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack just wrote the following report on the need for a new farm bill to support agricultural exports. “Over the course of 2013, we’ve seen yet another banner year for U.S. agricultural exports. Exports of U.S. farm and ranch products reached a record $140.9 billion in 2013 and supported about a million U.S. jobs. In fact, compared to the previous five-year period from 2004-2008, U.S. agricultural exports from 2009-2013 increased by a total of nearly $230 billion. read more
House Passes Short-term Farm Bill Extension

The bill extends the current farm bill until January 31, 2014. Congressman Frank Lucas (R-OK), chairman of the House Agriculture Committee said, The progress we have made certainly has been incredible and we are on the verge. This is an opportunity for members to cast a vote to acknowledge to the folks back home that no matter what happens in the negotiations process, we will not have a dairy cliff. We will not have uncertainty for producers and ultimately the American consumers. read more

House Passes Stopgap Farm Bill

Source: Reuters With the new U.S. farm bill a month away from completion, the House of Representatives on Thursday passed a stopgap extension of current law to avoid the “dairy cliff” although some lawmakers called the threat of high milk prices a fiction, according to a report filed by Reuters. The House passed the extension until Jan. 31, 2014 on a voice vote after less than 10 minutes of debate. read more
