Fracture Mechanics Medal presented to Dr. Richard Link.

ASTM International Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture has honored Richard E. Link, Ph.D., a professor at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, with the Fracture Mechanics Medal. A member of ASTM and E08 since 1985, Link received award in recognition of his outstanding work in advancement of fracture mechanics technology and contributions to related international standard test methods. He is past vice chairman of the committee and currently chairs Subcommittee on Fracture Mechanics.

GSK, Astra, J&J link with universities in new drug research fund

GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson have joined with three leading British universities to create a new 40 million pounds fund backing early drug research. The Apollo Therapeutics Fund, which aims to improve the speed and potential of university research being translated into new medicines, is a further example of a trend by Big Pharma to tap into academic science in the hunt for treatments.

Cinia finishes submarine cable to link Germany, Finland

(Telecompaper) Cinia Group completed a submarine data cable between Germany and Finland. The new digital highway offer a route to connect Central Europe with optimal data centre locations in Northern Europe and business opportunities in Eastern Europe and Asia. The Cinia C-Lion1 submarine data cable is a key initiative for both the Finnish government and the EU. The cable contributes to the Digital Single Market for Europe by enabling connectivity and redundancy to the Nordic region and further improving Finland's position as a gateway between the East and the West. The new connection is planned to be commercially available during spring 2016, following a commissioning and acceptance process.
