Asus grows smartphone shipments to 5 mln in Q2

2015-08-11 16:06:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Asus reported second-quarter sales of TWD 99.37 billion, up 4 percent from a year earlier but 3 percent versus Q1. Operating profit rose 7 percent year-on-year to TWD 4.72 billion, while net profit was down 3 percent from a year ago to TWD 4.66 billion. Asus shipped a total 4.8 million computers in the quarter, down from 5.4 million in Q1, while mobile device shipments increased over the same period to 6.0 million units from 4.5 million. The mobile growth came mainly from smartphones, which increased to 5.0 million units from 3.0 million in Q1. Computers still accounted for 61 percent of revenue, and mobile devices were good for 22 percent; Asus aims to reverse this and generate a majority of sales from mobile by 2018. For the third quarter, Asus targets growth in both product categories, to 5.4 million computers and 7.8 million mobile devices.

LG smartphone shipments fall 3% in Q2

2015-07-29 08:40:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) LG Electronics reported second-quarter sales down 7.6 percent year-on-year to KRW 13.93 trillion (USD 12.69 billion). Operating profit fell to KRW 244.1 billion, and net profit dropped to KRW 226.4 billion, in what LG called "an extremely challenging environment". LG said market conditions were more difficult than expected, but it hopes to recover the lost ground in Q3 with new products and more effective marketing. Sales at its mobile division were up just 1 percent in the second quarter to KRW 3.65 trillion, and smartphone shipments fell 3 percent from a year ago to 14.1 million units. Overall profitably was affected by weaker demand in the premium segment in its domestic Korean market, LG said. This was offset by 36 percent year-over-year growth in North America sales, due to a better performance of mid-range smartphones and tablets, and a record of over 8.1 million LTE smartphones sold in the quarter. From Q3, LG said it will more aggressively implement its dual strategy of focusing on both premium devices as well as mid-range smartphones targeting emerging markets.

Global smartphone shipments increase 11.6% in Q2

2015-07-23 17:42:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Global smartphone shipments rose 11.6 percent year-on-year in the second quarter to 337.2 million, according to market researcher IDC. This is the second highest quarterly total on record, with growth sustained after a strong Q1 by robust demand in many emerging markets. IDC said more affordable smartphones, often from local vendors, were driving the growth in the market, rather than the premium smartphones from the likes of Samsung and Apple. The market researcher noted as well that new vendors are joining the market every quarter in order  to capitalise on the local demand, with IDC now tracking over 200 smartphone brands in its reports. The shift to low-cost smartphones was underlined by the contraction in the feature phone market, with total mobile phone shipments down by 0.4 percent in the second quarter to 464.6 million units. The top five vendors included three from China: Huawei in third place with an 8.9 percent share of the global smartphone market, up from 6.7 percent a year ago; Xiaomi with a 5.3 percent share or 17.3 million phones sold; and Lenovo, with a 4.8 percent share, down from 8.0 percent year ago pro forma for its takeover of Motorola. Samsung remained the top vendor, with an estimated share of 21.7 percent of shipments, down from 24.8 percent a year ago. Apple was in second place, taking a market share of 14.1 percent, up from 11.7 percent in the year-earlier period.
