Manitoba Safeway workers say yes to strike mandate for union negotiators

Workers at Canada Safeway stores in Manitoba have voted almost 100 per cent in favour of a strike to back contract demands.

Private-equity firm Cerberus is the leading bidder for Safeway , Bloomberg reports, adding to a Reuters article that the two are close to a deal .

Investors and stock analysts have long been unhappy with Safeway 's financial performance, which led to an attempted hostile takeover last year.

Safeway has jumped 4.3% to $36.10 in pre-open trading after the grocery-store operator said it would put itself up for sale .

Safeway Inc, the second-largest U.S. mainstream grocery store operator, said on Wednesday it is in talks about a possible sale of the company.
