Feeder steers and heifers traded mostly $2-$6 per cwt lower, according to the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) as increased beef production and cattle numbers continue to weigh on prices. Calves sold mostly $6-$15 lower. Cash fed cattle traded sharply lower as wholesale beef prices continued to erode. Live prices were mostly $5 lower at mostly $105 per cwt. If price seasonality is intact, then there is more downside in the market this fall, says Andrew P. Griffith, agricultural economist at the University of Tennessee, in his weekly market comments. However, this fall is not going to be the worst of it. The cyclical nature of beef cattle prices could force the calf and feeder cattle market even lower the next couple of years. read more

Calf and feeder prices lose some steam

Bearish futures markets following the monthly Cattle on Feed report helped pressure cash cattle prices this week. Calves traded mostly steady to $5 per cwt lower, according to the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS). Yearlings sold steady to $5 lower early in the week and then mostly $3-$8 lower. Though too few to trend, live sales were $2-$4 lower in Nebraska and Iowa-Minnesota at $135-$137. Limited dressed sales in those regions were $4-$5 lower at $218. Live sales in the Southern Plains on Thursday were mostly $3 less than the previous week at $136. read more

Grazing demand continued to boost calf and feeder prices last week: firm to $5 per cwt higher for calves and stocker-weight cattle and $2-$5 higher for yearlings, according to the Agricultural Marketing Service. According to the Agricultural Marketing Service, a light test of calves sold mostly steady to $10 per cwt higher at major auctions, while a light test of yearlings sold steady to $4 higher. Direct trade was firm to $3 higher. "Producers should not expect a price resurgence before the end of the year for calves or yearling cattle," explained Andrew P.
