Antarctic Sea Ice Hits a Record Max, and Thats Not Good

2014-09-18 20:18:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Climate Desk: For the third year in a row, the sea ice ringing Antarctica has set a new record. Its extent is the farthest now since observations began in the late `70s, and scientists say the growth is largely the result of climate change. Antarctic sea ice melts during the early part of the year but typically packs it back on by September. The ice broke last year`s record for extent on Monday, according to a report in New Scientist. It`s the latest evidence of a small but significant growth trend of about...

Antarctic Sea Ice Soars, But Arctic Ice Still Shrinking

2014-09-18 18:05:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Nature World: For the third year in a row, Antarctica's sea ice is set to smash a new record this month. But while Antarctica's sea ice soars, the Arctic ice cap is still shrinking, making scientists ponder over the effects of global warming, a new report released Tuesday imparts. September is the month that usually sees the highest extent of Antarctic sea ice as the Southern Hemisphere winter ends, and Arctic ice reaches its all-time low as it says goodbye to the dog days of summer. The Southern Hemisphere's...

Arctic Sea Ice to Reach Sixth Lowest Extent on Record

2014-09-17 20:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Climate Central: As summer draws to a close, the Arctic sea ice melt season is coming to an end. And while the season didn't top 2012's astounding record melt, it has still resulted in what will likely be the sixth lowest September minimum ice extent on record. The extent, or area, of Arctic sea ice on Sept. 16, 2014, as it approached its minimum at the end of the summer melt season. The orange line shows the average extent of sea ice for the period from 1981-2010. The extent of the ice on Sept. 15 was 1.96...

Antarctic sea ice set for record high as Arctic heads for sixth lowest extent

2014-09-17 10:59:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Guardian: The extent of sea ice in Antarctica is set to reach a record high, scientists said on Tuesday, as they announced that Arctic sea ice appeared to have shrunk to its sixth lowest level ever. The NSIDC said that satellite data was expected to shortly confirm whether the maximum extent of sea ice at the opposite pole, in Antarctica, had set a new record. Antarctic sea ice is poised to set a record maximum this year, now at 19.7 million sq km (7.6m sq m) and continuing to increase, the centre,...
