Climate Change News: Diplomats working to update a treaty in Dubai`s broiling heat this week can be thankful for air-conditioned conference rooms. They are discussing the Montreal Protocol, which by banning CFCs is expected to fully restore the Earths damaged ozone layer by mid-century. Unfortunately the CFC substitutes found for use as coolants in refrigerators and air con brought their own problems -- they are highly potent warming gases. After years of talking about talking, envoys from 200 countries have...

No Telecom Italia partnership talks underway Vivendi CEO

2015-11-03 09:12:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Vivendi will not be making an offer to take over Telecom Italia either on its own or with any other potential partner, according to the French media group's CEO Arnaud de Puyfontaine. "Since we increased our stake, there has been a lot of speculation of Vivendi playing on behalf of Orange...but it has never been on the agenda. There has not been any discussion between Vivendi and Orange," de Puyfontaine told the Financial Times. The Vivendi CEO was responding to French press reports suggesting that his company, currently Telecom Italia's largest shareholder with a 20.03 percent stake, had held talks with other investors, including Orange and Egyptian telecoms billionaire Naguib Sawiris over the Italian operator's future. Last week French entrepreneur Xavier Niel, founder of internet provider Iliad, increased his holding in Telecom Italia via options that could give him a stake of more than 15 percent in Telecom Italia. "The situation both for Niel and for Naguib Sawiris is the same answer: there has not been a discussion with them about Telecom Italia," said de Puyfontaine.

Reuters: The shipping industry expects to be stung by a carbon levy as momentum building from climate talks in Paris starting this month makes a cut to its greenhouse gas emissions likely. Any tax - either a levy based on fuel use by diesel-driven ships or a market based mechanism - would add to rising costs for the industry, which transports 90 percent of world trade. A draft Paris text makes scant mention of reducing CO2 from marine bunker fuels. Yet ship industry sources say some form of taxation...

Sydney Morning Herald: The "increasingly unmanageable" threat of climate change on children's health has prompted an open letter from doctors around Australia to the government, calling for Federal Health Minister Sussan Ley to attend the United Nations Paris climate summit this December. In the letter, from independent organisation Doctors for the Environment Australia, leading doctors warn of the "health emergency" climate change presents for children, who have the least capacity to act. "More bushfires, floods...

Sean Penn says Paris climate talks 'last great hope'

2015-11-01 15:54:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Agence France-Presse: Hollywood star Sean Penn said Sunday the upcoming climate talks in Paris were the "last great chance" to stop the planet overheating. Penn, one of Hollywood's most socially engaged actors and directors, was in the French capital to meet Environment Minister Segolene Royal with less than a month to go until the 21st United Nations Climate Change Conference begins.
