Amazon unveils new Fire tablet for USD 50

(Telecompaper) Amazon is updating its Fire tablets range, adding a new USD 50 model, as well as introducing new high-end and kids models. The new Fire tablet for USD 49.99 will go on sale at the end of September, including an offer of buy five, get one free. The low-cost tablet offers a 7-inch IPS display, quad-core 1.3 GHz processor, front- and rear-facing cameras and up to 128GB of expandable storage via microSD. It comes with the latest version of the Fire OS, named 'Bellini', which Amazon said updates the user interface to replicate the look and feel of a magazine when browsing apps and content. The new tablet also coincides with the launch of Amazon Underground, the online retailer's new storefront for apps and games. Amazon also announced the new Fire HD tablet, in 8- and 10-inch versions for respectively USD 149.99 and USD 229.99. These will also run the 'Bellini' OS and go on sale from 30 September. The Fire HD is Amazon's thinnest tablet yet, at 7.7mm, and and features two stereo speakers and an HD display with over 1 million pixels and 16:10 widescreen aspect ratio. It runs a MediaTek 1.5 GHz quad-core processor and supports up to 128 GB storage with a microSD card. Finally, Amazon announced a new Fire Kids Edition tablet. Launched a year ago at USD 149.99, the new version costs USD 99.99 and comes with the updated tablet, a kid-proof case, one year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, 20,000 age-appropriate websites and YouTube videos, and a two-year guarantee.

Altice agrees to buy Cablevision for USD 17.7 billion

(Telecompaper) European telecom group Altice has reached a definitive agreement to acquire US operator Cablevision Systems for USD 17.7 billion in cash, at a price of USD 39.40 per share. This is Altice's second step in the US market, after its announced acquisition of Suddenlink in May. Cablevision is the leading cabler in the New York metro area (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut) and has 3.1 million residential and business customers out of over 5 million premises passed by its network. The transaction will be financed with USD 14.5 billion of new and existing debt at Cablevision, cash on hand at Cablevision and USD 3.3 billion of cash from Altice. BC Partners and CPP Investment board have an option to participate for up to 30 percent of Cablevision. Altice intends to raise equity by issuing Class A shares and has received full financing commitments from JP Morgan, BNP Paribas and Barclays. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of next year. The shareholders of Cablevision, which is owned by the Dolan family, have approved the transaction, said CEO James Dolan. The family will still own AMC Networks and Madison Square Garden after the Cablevision sale.

Clarin buys 49% stake in Nextel Argentina for USD 178 mln

(Telecompaper) Argentinian media conglomerate Clarin has reached a deal with NII Holdings to acquire a 49 percent stake in Nextel Argentina, with an option to acquire the remaining 51 percent pending regulatory approvals. Clarin said the total amount paid for the stake in Argentina's fourth largest mobile operator was USD 178 million, of which USD 159 million was paid up front, with the remaining amount due within 30 days. NII said the net proceeds received from the transaction will be used to provide additional liquidity to support its operations in Brazil.

Bavarian Nordic Receives Contract Valued at USD 9 Million from...

Bavarian Nordic A/S announced today the award of a subcontract from Crucell Holland B.V., one of Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson, valued at USD 9 million. This is part of a contract awarded to Janssen by the U.S. Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority to support the advanced development and manufacturing of the Ebola prime-boost vaccine regimen which consists of Bavarian Nordic's MVA-BNA Filo and Ad26.ZEBOV from Janssen.
