Alibaba invests USD 200 mln in Snapchat - report

(Telecompaper) Alibaba group is investing in Snapchat in a deal that values the messaging company at USD 15 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported. The Chinese e-commerce giant has invested USD 200 million in Snapchat, according to two people familiar with the transaction. The valuation of USD 15 billion marks a significant increase from previous investments. Snapchat raised funds from at least two investors, Yahoo and venture-capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, in a round of funding that valued the messaging start-up at USD 10 billion last year. Other investors include Benchmark, General Catalyst Partners, Institutional Venture Partners, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Coatue Management and DST Global.

Bain Capital to buy Blue Coat Systems for USD 2.4 bln

(Telecompaper) Enterprise security specialist Blue Coat Systems is being acquired by the private equity group Bain Capital. It will pay USD 2.4 billion to acquire the company from investor Thoma Bravo, which bought Blue Coat at the end of 2011 for USD 1.3 billion. During the past three years, Blue Coat has experienced strong market share and revenue growth in its major product lines and now counts 80 percent of the Fortune 500 as customers. The company has also made several acquisitions, extending its portfolio to advanced threat defense, security analytics and encrypted traffic management. Blue Coat said the new investor should help the company further accelerate its growth. The takeover is expected to close during the first half of 2015.

HKBN raises USD 750 mln in IPO

(Telecompaper) Hong Kong-based fibre network operator HKBN raised USD 750 million in an IPO, the Wall Street Journal reports. Private-equity firm CVC Capital Partners and other shareholders, including Singapore sovereign-wealth fund GIC, sold 645 million shares at HKD 9. CVC will hold about a 14.4 percent stake in the operator after listing, compared with 70.7 percent currently, while GIC will hold a 9.9 percent stake, down from 11.3 percent. HKBN is scheduled to list on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on 12 March. The offering is the largest in Hong Kong this year and the second biggest in Asia Pacific, after the USD 1.7 billion listing by Jasmine Broadband Internet Growth Infrastructure Fund in Bangkok last month.

HP to acquire Aruba Networks for USD 3 billion

(Telecompaper) HP has confirmed an agreement to acquire Wi-Fi equipment specialist Aruba Networks for USD 3.0 billion. Net of Aruba's cash and debt, the price totals USD 2.7 billion. Aruba and its 1,800 employees will join HP's Enterprise Group. Aruba's CEO Dominic Orr will lead the new unit focused on enterprise campus networking equipment, and HP will continue to use the Aruba brand. Aruba had revenues of USD 729 million in fiscal 2014 and has reported compound annual revenue growth of 30 percent over the last five years. HP said it will also leverage Aruba's highly regarded innovation engine and specialized sales, marketing and channel model. HP expects the acquisition to be accretive to earnings in the first full year following close. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of HP's fiscal year 2015, subject to Aruba stockholder approval and regulatory approvals in the US and other countries.
