FCC approves terms for mmWave 5G auction in 2019

(Telecompaper) The FCC has approved plans to release mmWave spectrum for 5G services in an auction in 2019. The order covers the 37 GHz, 39 GHz and 47 GHz bands, with a total of 3,400 MHz available.

Releasing mmWave 5G spectrum could raise USD 565 bln - GSMA

(Telecompaper) Releasing ultra-short-wave mobile spectrum could add USD 565 billion to global GDP and USD 152 billion in tax revenue from 2020 to 2034, according to a study conducted by TMG for mobile industry association GSMA. The move would also improve access to healthcare, education and mobility whilst reducing pollution and increasing safety, said the report, adding that such outcomes rely on government support for the identification of sufficient millimetre wave (mmWave) spectrum for the mobile industry at the next ITU World Radiocommunication Conference in 2019 (WRC-19).

AT&T demos mmWave 5G browsing on Netgear 5G mobile hotspot

(Telecompaper) AT&T said it completed what it calls the world's first millimeter wave mobile 5G browsing session with a standards-based device on a mobile 5G network on 25 October. The session was completed in Waco, on what will be a commercially available 5G device, the Netgear Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot. This is the first standards-based mobile 5G device in the world able to access a live mmWave 5G network, the company said.

AT&T claims world's first mobile 5G mmWave connection

(Telecompaper) AT&T made what it calls the world's first wireless 5G data transfer over millimetre wave using standards-based, production equipment with a mobile form factor device over the 8-9 September weekend, in Waco, Texas. The US operator also announced that it plans to introduce mobile 5G in parts of five additional cities, Houston, Jacksonville, Louisville, New Orleans, and San Antonio, in 2018.
