Water Shortage Seen Worsening From Climate Change in Potsdam Study
2013-10-08 21:07:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Bloomberg: Water scarcity will increase around the world due to climate change, with more than 500 million people affected if mean global warming is limited to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), based on modeling studies by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, or PIK. An additional 8 percent of humankind may face new or worse water scarcity with 2 degrees warming, the target set by international climate negotiators, the German government-funded institute wrote in a news release today....

IMF, World Bank heads lend clout to climate change efforts
2013-10-08 16:28:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: The world's finance ministers should focus on two elements to tackle climate change: setting the "right price" on carbon emissions and phasing out fossil fuel subsidies, International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde said on Tuesday. At a panel on the opening day of their 2013 autumn meeting, Lagarde and World Bank Group President Jim Young Kim said climate change was a priority for their lending institutions, the first time the two had addressed the issue together in public. Lagarde said...

Tackling climate change: Copenhagen's sustainable city design
2013-10-08 13:58:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Visualise the world in 2050: convex streets that collect water from superstorms and pocket parks that absorb heat and can be turned into reservoirs. Welcome to Copenhagen, where planners are preparing the city for the effects of climate change several generations from now. "We've looked at how climate change will affect Copenhagen in the long-term future", says Lykke Leonardsen. "For Copenhagen, the most serious effect of climate change will be increased precipitation, so we've developed a plan...

USA Today: President Obama is losing his top adviser on energy and climate change issues. Heather Zichal plans to step down in the next few weeks after five years in the administration. A replacement for Zichal, the deputy assistant to the president for energy and climate change, has not been named. From Reuters: "Zichal, 37, has advised Obama since his 2008 presidential campaign and helped shape the administration's policies to curb greenhouse gas emissions blamed for contributing to global warming....

New finding shows climate change can happen in a geological instant
2013-10-07 14:16:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
PhysOrg: "Rapid" and "instantaneous" are words geologists don't use very often. But Rutgers geologists use these exact terms to describe a climate shift that occurred 55 million years ago. In a new paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Morgan Schaller and James Wright contend that following a doubling in carbon dioxide levels, the surface of the ocean turned acidic over a period of weeks or months and global temperatures rose by 5 degrees centigrade - all in the space of about 13...
