Clean fuels: Oil industry blasts new carbon proposal
2015-10-19 22:46:17| Waste Management - Topix.net
The oil industry on Monday took swipes at proposed changes to Oregon's clean fuels program, using the last hearing before the law takes effect to poke holes in the state's method for calculating carbon output. Testifying before the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, oil industry advocates said the change would make it more difficult for fuel distributors to comply with the law and needled officials for considering changes in the 11th hour.

Leaders call carbon pricing worldwide
2015-10-19 21:45:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Agence France-Presse: A group of world leaders called Monday for countries around the world to put a price on carbon to strengthen the international fight against climate change. As a week of talks on a global climate agreement opened in Bonn, the leaders of the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Germany, France, Chile, Mexico, Ethiopia, and the Philippines called on others to back pricing schemes "to steer the global economy towards a low-carbon, productive, competitive future without the dangerous levels of...

Alaskan boreal forest fires release more carbon than trees can absorb
2015-10-19 21:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: A new analysis of fire activity in Alaska's Yukon Flats finds that so many forest fires are occurring there that the area has become a net exporter of carbon to the atmosphere. This is worrisome, the researchers say, because arctic and subarctic boreal forests like those of the Yukon Flats contain roughly one-third of Earth's terrestrial carbon stores. The research is reported in the journal Nature Climate Change. Alaska fire records go back only to 1939, and scientists often assume that present-day...

Carbon sequestration in soil: The potential underfoot
2015-10-19 21:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: A new study published in the journal Global Environmental Change projects that carbon sequestration in European cropland could store between 9 and 38 megatons of carbon dioxide (MtCO2) per year in the soil, or as much as 7% of the annual greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture in the European Union, at a price of carbon of 100 $/tCO2. "However, if strict emission reduction targets are only adopted inside Europe, efforts within the EU to reduce emissions could lead to increased emissions in other...

Climate models may be wrong as fires cancel forest carbon sinks
2015-10-19 17:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
New Scientist: Climate scientists may need to revise their predictions: instead of acting as carbon sinks, Earth`s northern boreal forests could start releasing carbon at a faster rate than they can capture it. Most global climate models treat these forests as storing about one-third of all terrestrial carbon in trees and, especially, in thick layers of peaty soil. Forest fires disrupt this storage temporarily, releasing carbon to the atmosphere until it can be recaptured by regrowth. The net effect of this...
