Texas Plant to Capture, and Then Reuse, Carbon
2014-10-17 02:50:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
New York Times: Amid the calls to capture carbon to save the climate, a Texas company is preparing to do that job for profit. At Capitol Aggregates, a cement plant near San Antonio, the Skyonic Corporation of Austin, plans to open a $125 million factory next week that will make industrial chemicals. Instead of mining natural deposits of carbon found underground, the plant will capture the carbon emitted from making cement a rich source and use it to produce chemicals like sodium bicarbonate and hydrochloric...

Fracking boom will increase global carbon emissions, scientists warn
2014-10-16 12:58:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Blue and Green: A global fracking boom will not help prevent climate change, as cheap shale gas would displace cleaner renewable energy and actually increase carbon emissions, according to a new study. Because the burning of shale gas, extracted through the controversial process of fracking, releases around 50% less carbon than conventional fossil fuels such as coal, proponents have suggested it could act as a bridge fuel. While investment in renewables is scaled up to meet demand, shale gas could fill in...

Banks feel the heat on carbon
2014-10-13 16:26:19| Automakers - Topix.net
Banks should be forced to disclose how much of their lending goes to companies exposed to action on climate change, according to resolutions proposed by the Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility ahead of the big banks' annual general meetings. ANZ Banking Group, Commonwealth Bank of Australia and National Australia Bank have a "material exposure" to companies linked with fossil fuel extraction whose businesses could be impacted by limits to emissions, says a report by ACCR, a Canberra-based lobby group on shareholder empowerment.
Reports: Mark Carney lends weight to carbon bubble theory

BusinessGreen: The Governor of the Bank of England has reiterated his warning that fossil fuel companies cannot burn all of their reserves if the world is to avoid catastrophic climate change, and called for investors to consider the long-term impacts of their decisions. According to reports, Carney told a World Bank seminar on integrated reporting on Friday that the "vast majority of reserves are unburnable" if global temperature rises are to be limited to below 2C. Carney is the latest high profile figure...

What Would Milton Friedman Do About Climate Change? Tax Carbon
2014-10-12 15:10:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Forbes: Leading economists at the Mecca of free-market economics, the University of Chicago, evoked their most prominent predecessor, Milton Friedman, last week in advocating a price on carbon to address climate change. At a forum called What Would Milton Friedman Do About Climate Change? former U.S. Rep Bon Inglis (R-SC) opened the discussion by playing a 1979 clip of Milton Friedman on the Phil Donahue Show: Phil Donahue: Is there a case for the government to do something about pollution? Milton...
