EU carbon declines as Polands auction debut set to boost supply

2013-09-15 15:36:22| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Bloomberg: European Union carbon permits dropped a second day as Poland prepared to auction allowances for the first time and German power prices fell. December permits fell as much as 3.7 percent to 4.96 euros ($6.58) a metric ton and were trading at 5 euros at 9:22 a.m. on the ICE Futures Europe exchange in London. Carbon jumped to as high as 5.56 euros on Sept. 9, the highest since January, as the EU regulator cut the free permits handed out to industry. Poland, the European Unions third-biggest emitter...

Tiniest plankton to thrive with increased CO2, upsetting ocean carbon cycle

2013-09-14 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Summit County: In the great global warming experiment there will be winners and losers, and it looks like some of the tiniest plankton species will be among the winners -- probably at the expense of larger species higher up the food chain. Research off the coast of Svalbard, Norway in 2010 showed that the smallest plankton groups thrive at elevated carbon dioxide levels. This could cause an imbalance in the food web as well as a decrease ocean CO2 uptake, an important regulator of global climate. The results...

Unexpected interaction between ocean currents and bacteria may weaken ocean's ability to absorb carbon

2013-09-13 16:45:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

ScienceDaily: For the first time, researchers have successfully demonstrated an interaction between ocean currents and bacteria: The unexpected interaction leads to the production of vast amounts of nitrogen gas in the Pacific Ocean. This takes place in one of the largest oxygen free water masses in the world -- and these zones are expanding. This can ultimately weaken the ocean's ability to absorb CO2. Three places in the world harbor extensive oxygen free water masses, called Oxygen Minimum Zones. In these...

World Bank to buy $63 mln in Costa Rican forest carbon credits

2013-09-13 12:43:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: The World Bank's Carbon Fund signed a deal on Tuesday with the government of Costa Rica to buy up to $63 million worth of forest-based carbon credits, the bank said. The agreement will allow the Central American country to expand a local program that pays landowners for conserving forests to an additional area of 340,000 hectares. The final price for each credit will depend on negotiations that will be carried by the World Bank's Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) with Costa Rica's officials,...

Carbon tax, threatened Down Under, warms up US climate debate

2013-09-13 07:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

ClimateWire: The promise to rescind Australia's carbon tax is causing some conservatives to throw bouquets, but climate advocates are downplaying the impact that the federal election Down Under might have on American efforts to price emissions. Prime Minister-elect Tony Abbott, of the conservative Liberal Party, made the nation's 1-year-old carbon tax a key theme in his campaign against incumbent Kevin Rudd, whose Labor Party elevated climate change to the peak of public policy as natural disasters whiplashed...
