Union Pacific Railroad is working to find out why a wheel on a car in a coal train failed earlier this month, leading to a jumbled mess south of Bayard. 32 loaded coal cars in an eastbound Union Pacific train jumped the tracks February 11th, leaving tons of twisted metal and coal scattered along the tracks along Nebraska Highway 92. UP spokesman Mark Davis tells KOTA Territory News investigators are now working to determine if the failure was due to metal fatigue or a problem during casting of the part.
