2013-08-30 02:35:44| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
BusinessGreen: Some of the UK's green NGOs could be willing to break the law if the government passes its controversial Lobbying Bill in its current form. Fears are mounting across the NGO and think tank sector that the new legislation, which receives its second parliamentary reading next week, will place draconian restrictions on their activities in the year before an election. The proposed regulations were originally designed to require corporate lobbyists to sign up to a public register, but they were subsequently...

National Geographic: London at night sparkles with beautiful lighting, from the 11,500 lights that brighten the Edwardian facade of iconic department store Harrods to the 4,000 that illuminate the outline of Albert Bridge, spanning the River Thames. But are these popular tourist attractions-and the rest of the United Kingdom-at risk of going dark? British authorities have been issuing some dire-sounding warnings. Guardian: Two pilot culls to kill up to 5,000 badgers in Gloucestershire and Somerset have begun. The cull, which the Guardian revealed last week would start on Monday night and the National Farmers Union has confirmed is under way, is designed to test whether badgers can be killed in a safe, humane and effective way. Farmers and the government say the cull is necessary to combat bovine tuberculosis, which led to 37,000 cattle being slaughtered in 2012, at a cost of 100m in compensation from the taxpayer....

2013-08-25 19:45:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Independent: The people of Balcombe in West Sussex have plenty to thank Britains archaic land-owning system for. Sitting in the garden of Colette Randall, an anti-fracking protester who lives a few hundred yards from the drill site, there is nothing to see but trees, nothing to hear but birdsong. The owner of the Balcombe Estate boasts of the magnificent, airy wildlife habitat with beautiful, mature specimens of trees which his familys management of local forests has produced over the past 60 years, and...
