German govt clears Blackberry acquisition of Secusmart

(Telecompaper) The German Federal government entered into an agreement with Blackberry about the acquisition of encryption specialist Secusmart, Sueddeutsche Zeitung reports. Secusmart provides software to secure mobile phones for the government. The agreement is based on the self-declaration that no legal or other obligations exist to disclose confidential information to foreign security agencies. Blackberry also allowed Germany's Federal Office for Information Technology Security (BSI) to see and control the company's source code, according to the newspaper. The details are specified in the contract between the government with Blackberry and Secusmart. Furthermore, Blackberry undertakes to report detected safety-related deficiencies in the government's operating systems as well as to sign a no-spy declaration. A framework agreement, which Deutsche Telekom has signed besides Secusmart, provides a supply of up to 10,000 devices. Currently, 2,500 Secusmart phones and 600 Telekom phones are used in ministries and authorities.
