Mongabay: The Rainforest Trust, which from 1988 until last month was known as the World Land Trust-US, has kicked off an effort to preserve some 2.4 million hectares (5.9 million acres) of rainforest in a remote part of the Peruvian Amazon. Consumer Groups Push for Salmonella to Be Declared an Adulterant

Scott Shearer, Bockorny Group, Washington, DC In a letter to USDA, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and several leaders of Congress, the Safe Food Coalition, urged that the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) immediately declare antibiotic-resistant strains of Salmonella to be adulterants. The letter also makes several additional recommendations about Salmonella control including requesting that FSIS require poultry plants to reassess their HACCP plans for Salmonella, enhance FSIS policy to assure that product linked to outbreaks is considered adulterated and seek authority from Congress for enforceable performance standards, mandatory recall authority and financial penalties. read more
