2016-03-08 01:57:10| Telecom - Topix.net
The Ontario Securities Commission ruled Monday that a minority shareholder in Corus Entertainment does not have the legal standing to challenge information the Calgary-based firm disclosed about its proposed $2.65-billion acquisition of Shaw Media. In Patent Litigation, Justice Delayed Ensures the Entire Public Can Be Denied
2016-01-12 20:45:14| Trucking - Topix.net
When courts fail to quickly address serious defects in a patent litigation complaint, it can harm not only the parties to the case, but also the public at large. Yesterday, EFF and Public Knowledge filed a friend-of-the-court brief with the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in a case where the Eastern District of Texas is allowing expensive litigation to drag on even though the defendant has already fully briefed validity issues that almost surely will dispose of the case, and stop the patent owner from suing on them in the future.

Memphis-based FedEx is being sued by a widow of a long-time employee, after she was denied pension benefits because the two were in a same-sex marriage, and on Monday, U.S. District Court Judge Phyllis Hamilton denied the company's attempt to have that lawsuit thrown out. California woman Stacey Schuett, the widow of 26-year FedEx employee Lesly Taboada-Hall, filed the lawsuit against the company last January after it refused to provide her with federally required spousal pension benefits.

A United Parcel Service Inc. delivery driver who received workers compensation for injuries caused by lifting a heavy box can't pursue a negligence claim against the package's sender, a California appellate court has ruled. Stephen Moore began working for UPS in 1989 and regularly lifted heavy boxes using proper lifting techniques taught by his employer, according to court records.
