5G-aliser: October 2020 update Assessing the FWA opportunity
2020-11-12 01:00:00| Total Telecom industry news
The only factor we have moved this month is on 5G devices and services, to reflect the launch of the long-awaited 5G-enabled iPhone. Replacement cycles for mobile devices are extending, so while this may not materialise into a super-cycle of upgrades, it will nonetheless catalyse demand for 5G services among high-end device users, particularly in iPhone heavy markets such as the US and UK, as well as in affluent markets in the Middle East. This growth has been driven by the combined impact of mobile network operators (MNOs) commercialising FWA services to households in underserved urban areas, the slow pace of fibre roll-out in some countries, government subsidies for rural broadband…read more on TotalTele.com »

Telefonica to test 5G FWA as alternative to fibre in Vigo
2019-05-06 10:33:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Telefonica will be testing the viability of using 5G fixed wireless access technology as an alternative to fibre as part of its recently-announced 5G pilot projects in Galicia, reports ADSL Zone. The tests will be conducted in underserved rural areas of the Vigo province with a view to expanding the company's network and reducing the digital divide. Telefonica already offers convergent packages including TV and 20Mbps broadband access via 3G and 4G networks but will be using the 3.5 and 26GHz bands to bring its Movistar Fusion Radio service to remote parts of Vigo during the trials, said the report.
