Is Farrowing Crate Design a Constraint to Weaning Average?
2013-06-10 21:01:00| National Hog Farmer
By Ron Ketchem and Mark Rix, Swine Management Services LLC, Fremont, NE. Last week, we attended an open house of a new, 6,000-sow farm equipped with electronic sow feeding (ESF) in large gestation pens. A tour of one of the farrowing rooms revealed 6 x 8-ft. farrowing crates with cast iron floors in the sow area and woven wire flooring in the pigs creep area. Crates also had rubber mats with heat lamps on both sides. read more

Shorten Wean-to-First-Service Interval to Boost Farrowing Rate, Total Pigs Born/Litter
2013-02-07 16:33:00| National Hog Farmer
By Ron Ketchem and Mark Rix, Swine Management Services, LLC, Fremont, NE As we work with farms to improve pigs weaned/mated female/year (PW/MF/Y), we continue to look at the interaction of key performance indicators. For this article, we will focus on wean-to-first service interval, which is the time it takes a weaned female to return to heat and be bred. read more
