European scientists say weedkiller glyphosate unlikely to cause cancer
2015-11-13 02:39:50| Chemicals - Topix.net
Glyphosate is unlikely to cause cancer in humans, the European Food Safety Authority said on Thursday, and the agency proposed a higher limit on the daily amount of residue of the popular weed killer deemed safe if consumed. The EFSA advises EU policymakers and its conclusion could lead the 28-member European Union to renew approval for glyphosate, which was brought into use by Monsanto Co in the 1970s and is used in its top-selling product Roundup as well as in many other herbicides around the world.

Monsanto's move on Syngenta could mean move away from glyphosate
2015-05-22 21:57:54| Chemicals - Topix.net
Monsanto Co, the world's largest seed company, is also known for the popularity of its Roundup herbicide, a weedkiller beloved by farmers and homeowners alike for its speed and deadly assault on tough weeds. But Monsanto's ongoing efforts to try to take over Swiss agrochemicals firm Syngenta, a rival whose product portfolio offers an array of agricultural chemicals, could spark a sell-off or de-emphasis of a product line that last year brought in roughly $5 billion, or a third of total revenues for Monsanto, according to industry sources.

Toxic Weed Killer Glyphosate (Monsanto's Roundup) Found in Breast Milk, Infant Formula
2015-04-11 18:57:37| Chemicals - Topix.net
The widely-used herbicide glyphosate, now classified as probably carcinogenic to humans by the World Health Organization, has been found in a number of items, including honey, breast milk and infant formula, according to media reports . "When chemical agriculture blankets millions of acres of genetically engineered corn and soybean fields with hundreds of millions of pounds of glyphosate , it's not a surprise babies are now consuming Monsanto's signature chemical with breast milk and infant formula," said Ken Cook, president and co-founder of EWG.
