Last week in telecoms: Vodafone and Telenor receiving approval for takeovers, as earnings season kicks off

(Telecompaper) A number of mergers and investments, as well as Q2's first earnings reports, set the tone in the telecoms sector, last week. The winners included Turk Telekom (+5.8%), Rostelecom (+5.5%), Intelsat (+5.4%) and Altice Europe (+5.4%). That could however not prevent the Telecompaper Stock Index European Telecoms Services to end week 29 down 1.4 percent, lagging the EuropStoxx 50 (-0.5%). Several German shares were the biggest losers, including 1&1 Drillisch (-13%), United Internet (-10%) and Tele Columbus (-7.7%).

Last week in telecoms: BT, Vodafone signalling business weakness and Macquarie wins the KCOM auction

(Telecompaper) BT, TIM and Vodafone warned their shareholders, last week, for business weakness, while KPN, Telekom Slovenije and Magyar Telekom conducted asset disposals. The KCOM auction ended with Macquarie winning the company. All in all, the Telecompaper Stock Index European Telecoms Services ended week 28 down 1.4 percent, as the EuroStoxx 50 index lost 0.9 percent.

Kenyan regulators oppose parliamentary attempts to split mobile money from telecoms services

(Telecompaper) Kenya's communication and financial sector regulators have warned against parliament's quest to split mobile money transfer services off from telecoms operators, Business Daily reported. The Ministry of ICT, Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) and Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) on 10 July asked lawmakers to be cautious in their effort to de-link  services such as M-Pesa, Airtel Money and T-Kash from their parent mobile telecommunication firms.

Last week in telecoms: takeovers of KCOM and Forthnet progressing, Tele Columbus makes a recovery

(Telecompaper) The Telecompaper Stock Index European Telecoms Services was up 1.8 percent in week 27, narrowly beating the EuroStoxx 50 index (+1.6%). Ahead of the Q2 earnings season the news flow was mainly limited to a number of mergers progressing. A diverse set of shares made the biggest gains: Greek challenger Forthnet (+16%), German cableco Tele Columbus (+13%), satellite operator Intelsat (+9.9%) and Spanish convergence operator MasMovil (+8.7%). Forthnet, a penny-stock, is closing in on doubling its share price year to date. Tele Columbus is making a remarkable recovery.
