Gas demand may grow this year at the fastest clip since the 1970s, partly thanks to low gas prices, according to a new report by Raymond James & Associates. Energy analysts at the St. Petersburg, Fla.-based financial services firm believe that the recent spate of low gas prices--at their lowest point in almost a decade--will drive a 3% or 300,000 barrels-per-day surge in U.S. demand for 2015.

The Pac-N-Sac convenience store located at 2100 Old Ranch Road 12 had its gas pumps closed by the Edward's Aquifer Authority Jan. 1 for exceeding the age limit for underground storage tanks. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality requires underground gasoline tanks east of the railroad tracks in San Marcos to be double-walled but does not impose age restrictions, said Bernie Borden, who has has owned Pac-N-Sac for 28 years.

Gasoline consumption has increased in response to its low price and is now forecast to be 5% higher in 2015 and 2016 than was originally projected. Shares of ethanol producers have suffered large losses since peaking last September, with price decreases of up to 60% for the period being common for independent producers such as Green Plains, Inc. , Pacific Ethanol , and REX American Resources .
