Deutsche Telekom revenue up 8% in Q1 on US growth

(Telecompaper) Deutsche Telekom reported first-quarter revenue up 8.0 percent year-on-year to EUR 14.9 billion, thanks to strong subscriber growth at T-Mobile US. Adjusted for currency effects and acquisitions, organic revenue growth was 4.2 percent. The growth in the US helped offset a 1.5 percent drop in sales in Germany and 6.5 percent lower revenues in the rest of Europe. The extra costs for growing the US business led to a 3.9 percent fall in adjusted EBITDA to EUR 4.1 billion. Net profit however more than tripled to EUR 1.8 billion, due to a gain on the sale of Scout24. Excluding the sale, net profit was down 23.5 percent to EUR 587 million. The operator's capex was down slightly to EUR 2.1 billion, and free cash flow declined 5.3 percent from a year earlier to EUR 983 million. Net debt was reduced by more than EUR 1 billion compared with the end of 2013 to EUR 38.0 billion. Deutsche Telekom reiterated its guidance for the full year 2014, for adjusted EBITDA around EUR 17.6 billion and free cash flow of EUR 4.2 billion.

Telekom Austria Q1 revenue down 7%, EBITDA falls 5%

(Telecompaper) Telekom Austria reported first-quarter revenue down 7.0 percent year-on-year to EUR 975.9 million, hurt by regulation, competition in its home market and currency inflation in Belarus. The mobile customer base fell 1.1 percent over the year to 19.99 million at the end of March. EBITDA was down 5.0 percent to EUR 319.9 million, and net profit was down 26.5 percent to EUR 40.8 million. Capital expenditure was reduced by a third compared to a year ago to EUR 99.4 million, while operating cash flow dropped 22.4 percent to EUR 144.8 million. Net debt was still at 2.0x EBITDA, equal to EUR 3.671 billion. In Q1, TA spent EUR 94.5 million renewing spectrum in Bulgaria and acquiring frequency rights in Slovenia. The operator maintained its outlook for an around 3 percent drop in annual revenues this year, capex of around EUR 700 million (excl spectrum) and a dividend of 5 cents a share. The company targets around EUR 100 million in opex and capex savings this year in order to offset the continued pressure on revenue. Telekom Austria added that the Croatian market remains challenging, and the operator is also facing there a significant increase in spectrum fees.

Deutsche Telekom launches MyWallet contactless payments

(Telecompaper) Deutsche Telekom has announced the launch of the MyWallet app and MyWallet Card to let customers in Germany make purchases with their smartphones. All customers who sign up for mobile payments with the MyWallet Card now will get an introductory bonus of up to EUR 40. MyWallet can be downloaded as a free app from the Google Play Store. Thomas Kiessling, Chief Product & Innovation at Deutsche Telekom, said that it planned to launch mobile payment products internationally later in 2014, including Slovakia in mid-May and Hungary later in the year. In addition to the app and a MyWallet-capable Android smartphone from Deutsche Telekom, customers need an NFC-enabled SIM card to use the digital wallet. Deutsche Telekom customers who already use a suitable smartphone can order the NFC SIM card free of charge.
