ISS Ground Segment and IT Engineer

Summary objective Support our team at the Microgravity User Support Center at DLR Kln and be responsible for the development, testing and administration of ground segment aspects and projects within the International Space Station programme at MUSC. This is an ideal position for a junior to middle experienced IT engineer to gain practical experience within the space sector and experience as Ground Controller within the ISS project. We are looking for a motivated talented engineer who can think out of the box and work independently. Responsibilities Duties Development, testing, configuration control and administration of various virtual data processing systems within the ISS ground segment, incl. data protection and mission control systems as well as network and firewall interfaces. Development, testing, configuration and administration of a distributed network capable of supporting the communication of telemetry, telecommand, voice, video and other forms of media within the ISS ground segment Onconsole mission support as certified ground controllerdata command engineer campaign mode Compilation of test plans, procedures and reports for operational interfaces Development and implementation of a central data protection system for mission data Conceptual design, implementation and testing of virtual clientserver systems for mission networks in line with existing IT security regulations and in collaboration with external partners Troubleshootingfailure analysis and failure recovery within clientserver environments and virtual networks Support service for intranet PCs and workstations according to a suitable Change Management ITIL Provision of project documentation incl. configuration control and documentation management IT support of development project involving robotics and virtual reality systems Qualifications Experience A relevant university degree in Information Technology or equivalent Working experience in the administration of Debian, SuseLinux and WindowsServer systems incl. SW development tools and SW development A working understanding of major network protocols to include at least TCP, UDP, DNS, DHCP, NTP, FTP HTTP and SSH Essential Skills Competency in settingup and operations of networks Good and detailed knowledge in the areas of networksvirtual networks LAN, WLAN , of network protocols OSI, NTP, DHCP, LDAP, network components and of firewall systems Sophos, nftables Technical knowledge in the area of virtualization Hypervisor VMware vSphere and KVM and in backup protection for virtual systems incl. failover protection Failover, Groovy Knowledge of physical and logical interfaces of mission control center equipment Experience with data, document and generic managementsystems Sound knowledge in IT security for networks Very good command of the English language Desirable Skills Ground Controller certification or prior experience in the ISS domain would be an asset.

Description ISS Increment Manager in the Research Utilisation Group, Directorate of Human Robotic Exploration Programmes. Duties Under the authority of the Group Leader, the postholder has overall responsibility for managing and coordinating endtoend preparation and implementation of ESA activities for specific assigned ISS Increments. These activities relate to the Columbus module, including its payload facilities, associated ground segment and ISS operations support. The postholder is responsible for preparing, implementing and overseeing execution of all ESA Columbus mission operations activities related to the assigned ISS Increment as defined in the respective Increment Requirements Document IRD. For IRDdefined Increments, the postholder is the interface between the utilisation management and the implementation services. Specifically, duties include defining and managing activities required to implement ESAs ISS requirements and requirements on NASA payloads in the Columbus module for a specific Increment planning and implementing Increment reviews coordinating and implementing the Certification of Flight Readiness process and undertakings for each flightstage of the Increment providing the operational interface to the ESA ISS Utilisation management during the preparation phase with respect to progress reporting, programmatic guidance and issue resolution daytoday management of Increment Requirements and priorities for the current Increment directing the operational implementation and support teams during the execution phase of a specific Increment providing the formal ESA interface with the NASA ISS Increment Manager and Launch Package Managers managing preparation of the postIncrement report. The postholder may be assigned other operationsrelated tasks not linked to a specific Increment during periods when there is no specific assignment. Working in a highly complex operational environment, the postholder needs to be able to integrate teams and operational entities spread across different countries. This requires an ability to plan and organise efficiently. Experience acquired in an international cooperation setting will be an asset. Description ISS Ground Segment Technical IT Systems Team Leader, ISS Operations Astronauts Group, Directorate of Human Robotic Exploration Programmes. Duties Reporting to the Group leader, the Team Leader will be responsible for ISS European Ground Segment maintenance and operations as well as Technical IT activities at the EAC, working closely with the ISS Operations, Exploration Systems, Payload Engineering and Utilisation Planning Teams, and supported by the team responsible for the EDRS satellite, TEC and EAC personnel. Main tasks include being Technical Officer for the Ground Segment GS maintenance and operations contract, maintaining its GS requirements and GS policy baseline, elaborating engineering change requests, monitoring and guiding their implementation and verification monitoring service compliance, providing performance assessments of contractors ensuring programmatic and technical coordination of GS requirements for new payloads including thirdparty ones commercial, national contributions, etc. and ColumbusISS enhancements through analysis of new payloads or enhancements to elaborate new requirements, defining contractor tasks, contributing to flight readiness certification coordinating all GS external interfaces with17 interconnected sites the Columbus Ground segment, being dispersed, requires continuous coordination to ensure services are received and provided as needed maintaining a strong level of nonclassified security across its GS by supervising implementation and enforcement of security practices across the ISS GS, through the Security Control Board and security consultancy contract supervising work done by the IT Team to support the various systems, infrastructure and operations at the EAC monitoring the ageing baseline of the Columbus GS, performing risk analysis and defining mitigation and evolution plans to keep the GS operational through to end of programme contributing to elaboration of requirements and development of GS systems in support of exploration missions and EACdeveloped analogues The postholder will be responsible for managing a team, its staff resources and activities. Applicants should have a good knowledge of spacebased operations and associated hardware andor software systems, preferably in the ISS Programme context, plus a sound understanding of the specific requirements, complexities and limitations of the ISS Ground Segment environment including security aspects and a good knowledge of currentfuture solutions and systems for the GS architecture and systems. Candidates should have relevant experience in the management of ground segment systems related to the ISS. Due to the works interdisciplinary nature, the postholder will be expected to establish and maintain good working relationships and networks with experts, inside and outside the Directorate, from other related disciplines. Experience of dealing with international partners and European national agencies is required. Previous people management experience is an asset, as is experience in an international environment i.e. outside ones home country and in diverse functional areas relevant to ESA activities.
