Sri Lanka's apparel exports are clearly recovering this year, thanks to the rebound of the European market and the return of the GSP-Plus treatment offering a duty-free access to E.U.'s territory. Exports to the United States have sharply dropped in the first quarter by contrast, with a possible recovery experienced in the last months, nevertheless. The country remains confronted with relatively high labor costs and a lack of skilled workers in the apparel industry. Myanmar's apparel exports have continued surging to the European Union in the first quarter this year, with shipments to Germany even doubling from a year earlier. The impoverished country takes advantage of a duty-free access to the European Union and of low labour costs. The sharp increase of the minimum wage this year could however weaken its competitiveness.
