The minimum wages are frozen in low-cost countries in Asia, reflecting the need for apparel exporters to protect their competitive advantage on a deeply disrupted global market. Minimum wages have even declined in most countries when converted in US$ terms, as reflected by our data series. Our report displays minimum wages in low-cost apparel manufacturing countries in Asia, from January 2015 to September 2020, in local currency and US$ terms. A 5-year comparison is available in local currency terms, 2015 US$ terms, and nominal US$ terms.

US apparel imports continued to recover in August, although still declining from a year earlier. Vietnam is a clear winner of the sourcing revolution triggered by the pandemic, along with Bangladesh. Our report covers US apparel imports on a monthly basis, comparing shipments from most origins in the last month and the year-to-date. Import data are available in volume, value, and unit value terms. Historical trends are analyzed over the 2000-2020 period, including cotton vs. man-made fiber apparel, and China vs. Vietnam, and the Rest of the World (RoW).

China tops US apparel import declines in August

The resumption of business for retailers following the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown helped boost US apparel imports in August on the month prior, but failed to lift numbers on a year-on-year basis. Compared to last year, China booked one of the largest falls in shipment volumes once again, with only three of the top ten reporting growth.

US textile body opposes GSP expansion to apparel and footwear

The National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO) has voiced strong support for a House resolution opposing the inclusion of apparel, textile and footwear products in the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) programme.
