HP quarterly revenues grow, led by computer sales

(Telecompaper) HP reported revenue for its fiscal third quarter to July up 1 percent year-on-year to USD 27.6 billion. Growth was led by its computer business, where revenues rose 12 percent year-on-year. HP grew both in the consumer and business segments, with total unit sales up 13 percent. At its Enterprise division, revenue rose 2 percent, with servers up 9 percent and networking revenue growing 4 percent. Enterprise Services revenue was down 6 percent year over year, and Software revenue fell 5 percent. HP's net earnings fell to USD 0.52 per share from USD 0.71 a year ago due to restructuring costs and were below the company's outlook of 59-63 cents. Adjusted EPS rose to USD 0.89 from USD 0.86, in line with HP's guidance. HP CEO Meg Whitman said she was "very pleased" with the company's progress and had increasing confidence in HP's turnaround. For the fiscal fourth quarter, HP forecast adjusted EPS of USD 1.03-1.07 and reported EPS of USD 0.83-0.87.

Bharti Airtel quarterly revenues up 13% on 3G expansion

(Telecompaper) Bharti Airtel reported revenues for its fiscal first quarter up 13.3 percent year-on-year to INR 229.6 billion. The growth was driven by a 74 percent increase in mobile data revenues to INR 22.0 billion, as well as a 9.1 percent rise in the number of customers to hit the 300 million mark. EBITDA for the three months to June rose 18.0 percent from a year earlier to INR 77.2 billion, giving a margin of 33.6 percent, up from 32.3 a year ago. A drop in financing costs helped net profit jump 61 percent to INR 11.1 billion. Airtel increased capital expenditure 74 percent to INR 39.9 billion, driven by the 3G roll-out in India. As a result, operating cash flow fell 12 percent to INR 37.3 billion. Airtel reported mobile revenues in its home market India up 10 percent to INR 127.5 billion, while EBITDA rose 25 percent to INR 47.1 billion. The number of customers in India rose 10 percent year-on-year and 2 percent from March to 209.41 million at the end of June. In Africa, the operator grew revenues 17 percent to INR 69.7 billion, and EBITDA rose 7 percent to INR 17.0 billion. The number of customers fell by 357,000 compared to March to 69.09 million, mainly due to a temporary sales ban in Nigeria.

Cisco quarterly revenues fall 8%

(Telecompaper) Cisco reported revenues for its fiscal second quarter ended 25 January down 7.8 percent year-on-year to USD 11.2 billion. Sales fell in all major regions and were down in most product groups, with data centre and the security equipment the only areas of growth. Net profit fell to USD 1.4 billion or USD 0.27 per share, from USD 3.1 billion or USD 0.59 per share a year ago. Profits were hit by a one-time charge of USD 655 million to resolve problems with memory components in older products, as well as USD 926 million tax benefits from a settlement with the IRS and R&D credits in the US. Despite the drop in profit, Cisco increased its quarterly dividend by 2 cents to USD 0.19 per share. Operating cash flow improved to USD 2.9 billion from USD 2.6 billion a year ago, and the company finished the quarter with USD 47.1 billion in total cash. Cisco said it had a book-to-bill ratio greater than 1 in the quarter. However, product orders were down year-on-year in all regions, from 5 percent lower in the Americas to a 2 percent drop in EMEA. Across customer segments, the company saw a 1 percent increase in orders from the commercial and public sectors, but the service provider market contracted by 12 percent, and enterprise was 2 percent lower.

Airtel quarterly revenues up 13%, profit more than doubles

(Telecompaper) Bharti Airtel reported fourth-quarter revenues up 13 percent from a year earlier to INR 219.4 billion. EBITDA rose 23 percent to INR 70.9 billion, and net profit more than doubled, to INR 6.1 billion from INR 2.8 billion a year ago. While capex was up 20 percent to INR 28.2 billion, the company still improved operating cash flow by 20 percent to INR 42.7 billion. Revenues in its home market India were up 10 percent to INR 144.4 billion, including 9 percent growth in mobile services to INR 116.4 billion. Mobile EBITDA improved 27 percent to INR 39.7 billion, and Airtel boosted capex by 68 percent year-on-year to INR 13.5 billion as it expands its fibre network and prepares for the launch of LTE. At its international operations in Africa and South Asia, revenues rose 4 percent to USD 1.2 billion, and EBITDA improved 2 percent to USD 306 million. The South Asia activities moved to a positive EBITDA of USD 5 million, and EBITDA in Africa was stable at USD 300 million. Capex across the international activities rose just 3 percent, to USD 174 million. Airtel increased its mobile customer base to 275.25 million at year-end, up 3 percent from the end of September and 10 percent more than end-2012. Mobile voice traffic was up 1 percent on a sequential basis, and non-voice services increased to 26.1 percent of revenues in Q4 from 25.0 percent in Q3.

Microsoft quarterly revenues increase 14%

(Telecompaper) Microsoft reported record revenue of USD 24.52 billion for the quarter ended 31 December, up 14 percent from a year earlier. The company's operating profit for the fiscal second quarter rose 3 percent to USD 7.97 billion, and net earnings were also up 3 percent, to USD 0.78 per share. The strong sales were driven by the Devices and Consumer unit, with revenues up 13 percent to USD 11.91 billion, and the Commercial division, where sales increased 10 percent to USD 12.67 billion. The Consumer division was led by strong sales of the new Xbox gaming console and double-digit growth in search advertising, while sales of the Surface tablet doubled on a sequential basis to USD 893 million. Microsoft said Windows revenue was down 3 percent, hurt by weak consumer PC sales, but the company saw 12 percent grow in sales of the professional version of the OS. At the Commercial division, it also saw strong demand for SQL Server, System Center, Office 365 and Azure software and cloud services. Microsoft said it gained market share as its products grew faster than the overall enterprise IT market.
