After a number of train versus car, truck and tractor accidents in Weiner, Union Pacific Railroad Company and local law enforcement want drivers to be safe at the tracks. Union Pacific Police Department along with Arkansas State Police, the Poinsett County Sheriff's Department and Weiner Police Department teamed up to encourage safety along the tracks.

NREL Innovation improves safety of electric vehicle batteries.

NREL recently patented the Internal Short Circuit device to enhance lithium-ion battery designs by testing effects of latent internal short circuit and related escalating temperatures, which can lead to thermal runaway. Built into battery being tested, NREL tool is capable of replicating naturally occurring internal short without tampering with cell exterior. Device can produce all 4 types of shorts: electrode to electrode, electrode to cathode, electrode to anode, and cathode to anode.

API develops pipeline safety management standard.

In response to a recommendation from the NTSB, American Petroleum Institute has developed American National Standards Institute/API Recommended Practice 1173, Pipeline Safety Management Systems for the pipeline industry, which exceeds Safety Board’s recommendation. API, which represents commercial concerns throughout the oil and natural gas industry, also addressed safety culture and other safety-related issues in the new recommended practice.
