Google, others seek authorisation to publish FISA requests

2013-06-12 08:51:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Google chief legal office David Drummond has written to the US Attorney General and FBI director to ask them to make it possible for the company to publish the full number of national security requests and number of accounts covered by the requests, including Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) requests, in its Transparency Report. Such a move would show that the requests are fewer than last week's reports of unfettered access through the PRISM programme suggest. Drummond writes that "Google has nothing to hide," and transparency will "serve the public interest without harming national security". Google already publishes the number of national security letters it receives from the government, but is prevented from including FISA disclosures. Microsoft, Facebook and Twitter have all said they would welcome further transparency.
