NZ dollar slumps to 4-year low

The New Zealand dollar is headed for a 2.1 per cent weekly decline against the US dollar, having hit a four-year low after the Reserve Bank on Thursday removed its bias for higher interest rates, saying the benchmark rate could go up or down. The kiwi was at US72.80c at 5pm in Wellington, having touched a low of US72.28c yesterday morning, and from US74.36c at 8am on Monday.

Halliburton, Baker Hughes to lay off thousands as oil slumps

Oilfield service providers Baker Hughes Inc and Halliburton Co plan to cut thousands of jobs as drilling activity slows further due to a steep fall in crude oil prices. Global oil prices have tumbled almost 60 percent since June, hitting five-year lows as growing production and tepid global demand has caused a supply glut and prompted oil producers to scale back spending.
Schlumberger to fire 9,000 people as oil services demand slumps

Schlumberger Ltd., the world's No.1 oilfield services provider, said it will cut 9,000 jobs, or about seven per cent of its workforce, as it focuses on controlling costs amid plummeting oil prices. The company said it took charges amounting to $1.77 billion in the fourth quarter including impairment charges related to its seismic business, Venezuela currency devaluation and job cuts.

Economy Chinese stocks ended lower today after hitting their highest level in over five years during the session. Shares rose 3.4% after falling factory-gate prices spurred speculation that the government will ease monetary policy further, but stocks quickly pulled back in the last hour of trade.
