Aug 2 Saudi Arabia's stock market fell in early trade on Sunday after oil prices dropped, while Egypt's bourse was rose slightly after encouraging news on the country's investment projects. The main Saudi index fell 1.7 percent and petrochemicals giant Saudi Basic Industries, down 1.8 percent, was the main drag.

Middle East stock markets fell on Sunday after oil prices dropped to their lowest levels since March, and even better-than-expected earnings from the region's biggest listed firm, Saudi Basic Industries, could not offset the overall gloom. Brent and U.S. crude futures on Friday posted their fourth straight weekly decline as weak economic data from China and a rise in U.S. oil drilling rigs pressured them.

Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, Inc. says it will buy a major Egyptian pharmaceutical company for about US$800 million as a platform for further expansion in the Middle East and North Africa. The deal will include Amoun's manufacturing plant, which Valeant says is one of the largest and most modern in the region.

Gulf stock markets came off early highs to close mixed on Sunday, while Egypt continued to rebound but low trading turnover cast doubt on whether any extended recovery was beginning. Buying of beaten-down blue chips boosted the Saudi index as much as 0.8 percent in early trade, but it ended 0.3 percent lower.
