Exclusive: Why a Mon River steel plant keeps getting looked at for ethane cracker

A former Mon Valley steel plant was considered for an ethane cracker project that last week went to Belmont County, Ohio. According to Washington County Commissioner Larry Maggi , Marubeni Corp. and PTT Global Chemical, which last week announced they had chosen Belmont County, Ohio, as the home for its proposed plant, had been eying a brownfield site along the Monongahela River.

Asian Firms May Invest $5 Billion in Cracker

As a firm already capable of producing 8.8 million tons worth of petrochemical products per year, Thailand's PTT Global Chemical may increase annual capacity by 1 million tons if it proceeds to crack ethane at the site now home to FirstEnergy's R.E. Burger plant in Belmont County. PTT Global and its Japanese partner, Marubeni Corp., on Wednesday joined Ohio and Belmont County officials to confirm intentions to build a $5 billion ethane cracker.
