Australia: Tony Abbott's Budget Cuts on Research a Declaration of War on Science

International Business Times: Australia's scientists have found one common enemy in the person of Prime Minister Tony Abbott. Since Mr Abbott won the September 2013 election, some of the country's brilliant researchers have complained that their funding has been cut. The scientists claim their "expertise" is constantly overlooked in favour of deniers and skeptics. The scientific community in Australia is speaking out to express their fears as the Abbott government's first annual budget will have more cuts for research in world-class...
The $1 origami microscope could revolutionize disease diagnosis, revitalize kids interest in science and biology
2014-04-16 14:37:07| Extremetech
An engineer at Stanford University has created a DIY microscope, called the Foldscope, that is fashioned out of a single piece of printed-and-folded A4 paper, origami-style. This paper-based microscope is incredibly cheap to produce (less than a dollar), and yet still offers a very high magnification level (2,100x) that can be used to diagnose various strains of malaria and other diseases. Given that diagnosis currently requires a cumbersome optical microscope that costs hundreds or thousands of dollars, the Foldscope will revolutionize medicine -- primarily in poorer countries, but also here in the west.

ThinkProgress: Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL) readily admits hes not smart enough to determine the roots of climate change. He is, however, able to rule out one possible cause: humans. The freshman congressmans remarks came in an interview with ThinkProgress Monday following a town hall meeting. Asked about the spate of extreme weather, including weeks of punishing drought, that has gripped parts of Florida in recent years, Yoho dismissed the idea that it could be a symptom of manmade climate change. I think its...
