PaaS market to reach $14 billion by 2017, IDC says

The global market for PaaS (platform as a service) is set to leap from US$3.8 billion last year to more than $14 billion in 2017 as companies look to cut infrastructure costs and speed up application development, according to newly released research from analyst firm IDC. Overall, the compound annual growth rate for PaaS during this period will be roughly 30 percent, compared to the 4 percent growth rate this year for IT spending overall, according to IDC.

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison typically uses his annual OpenWorld conference keynotes to deliver the company's biggest announcements and strategic positioning, and this year they will apparently involve an in-memory database and Oracle's PaaS (platform as a service) offerings. On Sunday, Sept. 22 Ellison will deliver his first keynote, which is titled "Oracle Database 12c In-Memory Database and M6 Big Memory Machine," according to an announcement released Tuesday.

Red Hat's OpenShift PaaS goes live

After two years of beta testing, the Red Hat OpenShift Online PaaS (platform as a service) has been pressed into commercial use, charging customers and offering professional commercial support. Over a million applications have been built on the service already, and about 2,000 new applications are created every day with OpenShift Online, said Ashesh Badani, Red Hat's general manager for the service. Every week, the service gets about 1,500 new users.
Software AG buys LongJump for cloud PaaS

Software AG has picked up cloud PaaS (platform-as-a-service) vendor LongJump in a bid to give small and medium-sized companies a way to rapidly develop applications with less involvement from IT. Terms of the deal, which was announced Thursday, were not disclosed. LongJump's platform gives users a set of models and templates for building applications, with no need to code, according to Software AG's announcement. Applications can be deployed on public and private cloud services, as well as on premises and through mobile devices.
