Microsoft slashes Surface RT price by 30% due to sluggish sales, prepares to launch updated Surface RT and Pro tablets
2013-07-15 16:39:35| Extremetech
In response to sluggish sales, Microsoft has axed the price of its Surface RT tablet by 30%. The 32GB Surface RT, which used to cost $500, is now just $350.The Surface Pro, with its chunky dimensions and weak battery life, is still priced at $1000. In other news, Microsoft has also confirmed that the Surface RT and Pro will be updated, probably alongside the release of Windows 8.1 and the Xbox One. Whether either of these moves will actually make Microsoft's crippled, Metro-only Windows RT tablet useful remains to be seen.
New boot firmware a step toward 64-bit Windows RT
2013-05-09 00:20:36| InfoWorld: Top News
A standards organization has created a boot environment for tablets and PCs that could potentially run a 64-bit version of Windows RT. The UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) Forum on Wednesday announced that its boot firmware specifications will now support ARMv8, a 64-bit processor architecture announced by ARM in 2011. ARM's processors are used in most smartphones and tablets, and chip makers such as Nvidia and Samsung are expected to release 64-bit processors for smartphones and tablets in the future.
The tablet market is now almost PC-size, but Windows 8 and RT continue to flounder

IDC has finally published its Q1 2013 report of the tablet market, and it isn't good for Microsoft. Between January and March 2013, Microsoft sold just 900,000 of its Surface tablets, essentially showing no growth from Q4 2012 -- and more importantly, despite the January release of the Surface Pro. These figures are even worse when you zoom out: In Q1 2013, 49.2 million tablets were sold worldwide -- a year-over-year increase of 142%, with Samsung and Asus showing YOY growth of 282% and 350% respectively.
