NTSB issues safety alerts for pilots and mechanics.

NTSB issued 4 Safety Alerts highlighting safety issues identified in several recent accident investigations. Three alerts are geared towards general aviation pilots and address mountain flying skills and survival equipment; transition training before flying unfamiliar aircraft; and performing thorough preflight checks on aircraft that have just received flight control or trim system maintenance. Safety Alert aimed at mechanics discusses flight control and trim system misrigging problems.

Southwest Airlines pays $35,000 to settle mechanic's - whistleblower' case

Southwest Airlines and a Southwest mechanic have settled a "whistleblower" case in which the mechanic said the airline threatened to punish him for reporting fuselage cracks that grounded a Southwest airplane. Southwest on Jan. 16 agreed to pay $35,000 in attorney's fees and expenses for mechanic Charles Hall, who discovered the cracks as he was doing a maintenance inspection on a Boeing 737-700 last July.
