PS4 hits 10 million units sold, while Xbox One still sits at around 5 million

At Gamescom in Germany, Sony has announced that the PlayStation 4 has sold over 10 million units since it launched nine months ago in November 2013. Meanwhile, Microsoft still hasn't released any recent sales figures for the Xbox One, suggesting the console isn't doing all that well. Our estimates put the Xbox One at around 5 million units sold through to customers -- or about half the total sales of the PS4. According to a fateful quote by ex-Xbox chief Don Mattrick, it would appear that the PS4 has won this generation's console war.

Could Microsoft upgrade the Xbox Ones hardware to fix the PS4 performance gap?

As you are well aware, there is a sizable gap between the hardware specifications of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. But who says this will always be the case? It's not unusual for a console to be tweaked or upgraded multiple times throughout its lifetime as new (cheaper) hardware becomes available. Because both consoles use fairly standard PC hardware, could Sony or Microsoft upgrade their consoles to close (or widen) the current performance gap?

PS4 outselling the Xbox One 3-to-1 as total sales gap grows to 9 million vs. 5 million

According to its latest sales figures, Sony outsold Microsoft three-to-one in the quarter ending June 30. During its quarterly earnings call yesterday, Sony said that it had sold a combined total of 3.5 million units of the PS4 and PS3, compared to Microsoft's quarterly figure of just 1.1 million Xbox One and Xbox 360 consoles. Neither Sony or Microsoft opted to break down these numbers into per-console sales figures, but using previous announcements as a baseline it's probably around 70-30 in favor of the PS4 and Xbox One. In short, this means Sony sold around 2.5 million PS4s last quarter, compared to about 800,000 Xbox Ones.

PlayStation Now public beta launches today on PS4

Today, Sony plans to roll out the PlayStation Now public beta for PS4 owners. Over 100 PS3 games will be made available for rental in the US and Canada, but more platforms, regions, and titles are on their way. After months of waiting, now we finally get to see if Sony can deliver on the promise of game streaming from the cloud. Will it be everything we hoped for?
