Consumer Reports says 45 State Attorneys General Call on Phone Companies to Help Stop Robocalls

Attorneys General from 45 states around the country called on the major phone companies today to provide their customers with effective tools to help stop the flood of unwanted robocalls. The effort comes just weeks after the Federal Communications Commission made clear that phone companies can and should offer such tools and as nearly 330,000 Americans have joined Consumers Union's End Robocalls campaign calling on them to do so.

The attorneys general of 44 U.S. states and Washington D.C. on Wednesday asked the country's largest phone companies to install technology that would allow consumers to block automated telemarketing calls, known as robocalls. In a letter to the chief executives of AT&T Inc, CenturyLink Inc, Sprint Corp, T-Mobile USA Inc and Verizon Communications Inc, the attorneys general said a June 18 ruling by the Federal Communications Commission made clear there are no legal barriers to offering the technology.

Ohio AG Urges Top Cell Phone Companies To Block Robocalls

Judge awards nearly $230,000 to woman who got 153 robocalls

U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in Manhattan ordered Time Warner Cable Inc. to make the $229,500 payment to Araceli King of Irving, Texas, citing the New York-based company's “particularly egregious" behavior as it violated the Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991. Hellerstein said he tripled the $1,500 penalty for each call because Time Warner's actions were “particularly egregious" since it continued making the calls even after King complained in a seven-minute phone conversation in Oct. 2013 with a company representative that the calls to her phone were apparently meant for a customer she did not know.
