The DualShock 4 and Xbox One gamepad have seen a largely positive response from the gaming industry. The issues from the previous generation have been fixed, and it seems we've reached the pinnacle of traditional console-style controllers. It wasn't an easy task, though. Controllers have been evolving over the last thirty-some years, and these latest models required substantial engineering prowess to outshine everything that came before. I'm excited to hold them both in my hands, but I'm left wondering where we can go from here.

One of the biggest brand advantages Microsoft has over Sony during the Xbox 360 and PS3 generation is its controller. Love the Xbox 360 gamepad or hate it, it works wonderfully with compatible PC games -- simply plug and play. Meanwhile, Sony's DualShock 3 worked, but it required third party drivers. This time around, Sony is looking to get its DualShock 4 into the world of PC gaming, and will make its controller work with PCs right out of the box.

The first concrete bit of info we had about Sony's PlayStation 4 was about its controller, rather than the console. The first piece of PS4 hardware we saw was also the controller, instead of the console. Now, with E3 only a couple of months away, and the PS4's release soon after that, there are still many questions to be answered regarding Sony's next-gen console.
