Nokia commercialises next-generation 5G Cloud RAN

(Telecompaper) Nokia said that its next-generation 5G AirScale Cloud RAN platform based on vRAN2.0 will be commercially available in 2020 with general availability expected in 2021, following a series of successful trials. Nokia's first generation 5G AirScale Cloud RAN based on vRAN1.0, which has a virtualised Central Unit, has been in commercial operation on a mmWave network in the US since early 2019.

(Telecompaper) A new industry coalition has formed to promote open RAN technologies among government policymakers. The Open RAN Policy Coalition includes many of the telecom operators from around the world that are testing open RAN equipment, as well as the hardware companies working on developing mobile radio networks based on open-source, modular products. They see open RAN as a possible answer to government concerns about 5G network security and call for the state to play a roll in supporting the new approach to building mobile networks.

Telefonica extends Open RAN 4G and 5G partner ecosystem, to launch trials this year

(Telecompaper) Telefonica has announced an agreement to collaborate with Altiostar, Gigatera Communications, Intel, Supermicro and Xilinx to boost the development of Open RAN technologies in 4G and 5G. The company also said it intends to launch vendor-neutral 4G and 5G Open RAN trials in UK, Germany, Spain and Brazil this year.
