Trinity Industries Inc.'s guardrail system, which has come under scrutiny for locking when hit and piercing cars instead of helping them slow, passed the first four of eight government-mandated crash tests, a federal highway agency said. The Federal Highway Administration said last Friday that the devices used in the tests didn't penetrate the vehicles or their occupant compartments.

Trinity guardrail study is faulted in new review

A study linking deadly highway crashes to a Trinity Industries Inc. guardrail system was found to have fundamental flaws by independent reviewers brought in after states banned the safety devices. At least 42 states and the District of Columbia have suspended installations of the system, some of them based partly on the study of Trinity's ET-Plus guardrail end terminal, which is designed to absorb the impact of a crash.

A federal jury determined that Trinity Industries, a Texas-based guardrail manufacturer, must pay $175 million in penalties after a whistleblower alerted authorities to False Claims Act violations by the company. Trinity manufactures many of the guardrails that you see as you drive on highways and roads across the nation.
