Summary An opportunity for an experienced Earth Observation Engineer to provide support onsite at ESTEC for Telespazio VEGA UK in the area of microwave remote sensing of natural surfaces. Objective Support to Earth Observation projects in the field of microwave active and passive remote sensing of natural surfaces land and sea and of atmosphere wave interaction, data processing, retrieval algorithms and performance assessment. Responsibilities Duties Duties will include but are not limited to Support to Earth Observation projects in the field of microwave active and passive remote sensing of natural surfaces land and sea and of atmosphere wave interaction, data processing, retrieval algorithms and performance assessment Support to internal activities and projects in the field of microwave propagation in the atmosphere theoretical and empirical modeling, and related analysis of impact on telecom, navigation or data downlink for Earth Observation and Space Exploration missions RD in related fields Support to the experimental facility Qualifications Experience PhD or MSc in Physics, Remote Sensing or related specialization. At least 4 years of relevant work experience. Background in the physics andor engineering of microwave interaction with natural environment Experience with microwave remote sensing observation concepts Experience with microwave atmosphere propagation models Good programming skills Previous experience with experimental instruments e.g. ground microwave radiometers is considered an asset. Essential Skills Good English language skills Excellent communication and presentation skill Excellent analytical skills High standard of document drafting Ability to work effectively both within a small team and in an autonomous way Qualities Positive, cando approach to solving problems. For our customer in Darmstadt we are looking for a Products and Applications Software Engineer in the field of Remote Sensing. Our customer EUMETSAT is an independent intergovernmental organisation founded in 1986 to establish maintain and exploit European systems of operational meteorological satellites and to contribute to the operational monitoring of the climate and the detection of global climate changes. A further objective of EUMETSAT is to provide data, products and support services to the European Copernicus information services and user communities, with a focus on marine, atmosphere and climate. EUMETSAT is governed by a Council representing 30 Member States and 1 Cooperating State. Tasks The candidate will maintain and develop new SW in the following areas Instrument navigation, registration, and calibration Derivation of geophysical products from remote sensing data Application of satellite data in meteorology, oceanography, and atmospheric composition Radiative transfer theory Atmospheric chemistry and physics Meteorology and oceanography Development and maintenance of operational scientific data processing and monitoring software Calibration and validation expertise of Level 1 and Level 2 products Scientific document writing. Could you contribute to the scientific development, maintenance and quality monitoring of atmospheric products from our ultraviolet, visible, near and shortwave infrared spectrometers based on our next generation of satellite missions? EUMETSAT operates the Copernicus missions on behalf of the European Commission, providing marine and atmospheric data services to monitor climate change. To support the remote sensing activities of these missions, we are recruiting two scientists to be responsible for the development, maintenance and validation of products derived from Copernicus Sentinel4UVN and Sentinel5UVNS instruments. Your role at EUMETSAT Within this role you will support the scientific development of calibrated radiance, irradiance and derived atmospheric composition products from ultraviolet, visible, near and shortwave infrared satellite instruments. These activities will provide the opportunity to actively support operational and scientific interactions with user communities, other agencies and the European Space Agency ESA, responding to their evolving needs. You will provide scientific support to the operational implementation of data processing and products, prototyping software and providing the associated documentation. You will define, calibrate and validate the longterm monitoring activities for this suite of products, formulating future requirements as the needs of our users evolve. To be successful you should have a degree level qualification in remote sensing or another relevant discipline. Your experience in the retrieval of trace gases and other atmospheric products ultraviolet, visible, near and shortwave spectrometers should be coupled with an expertise in the use of radiative transfer models. We would expect you to have developed scientific application software, and demonstrable experience of working with user communities and researchers. You should also have experience of working in an operational data processing environment with knowledge of scientificallyoriented coding languages. You need to be organised, with an ability to understand and explain complex scientific information to your team and the user communities.
