Apple upgrades TV box with iOS apps, Siri remote
2015-09-09 23:08:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Apple has confirmed the launch of a new version of its Apple TV box. The company introduced the tvOS operating system and Siri Remote system for navigating the box based on a system of apps. The redesign of the box opens it up to iOS developers to add to the media player's functionality with apps and games similar to those available for the iPhone and iPad. The apps will be distributed to users through the new Apple TV App Store. The accompanying Siri Remote features a touch control, accelerometer and gyroscope, as well as voice controls to search, navigate and control apps, games and video programming on the Apple TV box. Users can use the Siri remote to search for specific programmes or genres like "Find the best funny movies from the '80s" or "Find popular TV shows for kids" and Apple TV will search iTunes as well as apps such as Netflix, Hulu, HBO and Showtime, displaying all the relevant programmes. The Siri remote also offers playback control and on-screen navigation, as well as quick access to sports, stock and weather information. The new Apple TV will be more expensive than its predecessor, launching at the end of October from USD 149 for a 32GB model and USD 199 for a 64GB model from Apple.com, Apple's retail stores and select Apple resellers. A beta version of the tvOS SDK is available now developers.
