Samsung confirms sharp drop in Q3 profit
2014-10-30 08:21:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Samsung Electronics confirmed a drop in third-quarter sales to KRW 47.45 trillion from KRW 59.08 trillion a year ago. Operating profit more than halved to KRW 4.06 trillion, and net profit fell to KRW 4.22 trillion from KRW 8.24 trillion in the same period of 2013. As warned earlier by the company, the weak results were due mainly to competitive pressure on its mobile phones business. The mobile division recorded sales of KRW 24.58 trillion, down from KRW 36.57 trillion a year ago and 14 percent less than in the second quarter. Operating profit from the activities plunged to KRW 1.75 trillion from KRW 6.70 trillion in Q3 2013. Samsung said smartphone shipments were up "slightly", mainly in the low-end and mid-range segment, leading to a lower average selling price and pressure on margins. The Galaxy Note 4 launched at the end of the quarter only had a marginal impact on sales. The tablet market remained highly seasonal, with the new Tab S helping grow shipments. Samsung said it expects seasonal market growth in Q4, but competition and price pressure will intensify as a large number of new models come out. At Samsung's other activities, semiconductors was the only one to show revenue growth in the quarter, led by solid memory demand from the PC and phone markets. The TV market was weaker after the run-up to the World Cup, and the display business saw a slowdown in the OLED market.

KPN sales drop 4.9%, EBITDA down 15% in Q3
2014-10-28 08:22:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) KPN reported third-quarter sales down 4.9 percent to EUR 1.98 billion, hurt by mobile price pressure and continued weakness in the enterprise market. EBITDA fell 15 percent year-on-year to EUR 633 million, of which 3 percent of the drop came from ending its handset leasing offer. The net result was a loss of EUR 76 million, in part due to a writedown of the value of its option to buy out Reggefiber by EUR 114 million. The Dutch operator said it was satisfied with the results, with customers growing on the mobile market and more bundled services delivered to businesses. Customer satisfaction also appears to be improving, following the simplification of the group's service range. KPN left its outlook unchanged, for growth in free cash flow next year, thanks to lower interest charges and taxes. The company also targets a higher dividend next year, compared to this year's 7 cents per share. For the rest of this year, KPN targets a stabilisation in results. Capex is expected to reach EUR 1.4 billion in 2014 and EUR 1.5 billion next year. KPN said it plans to use part of the EUR 5 billion received from the sale of E-Plus to pay off EUR 2 billion in outstanding bonds. It will also increase its stake in Reggefiber and contribute EUR 200
Falling oil price puts BP's profits at risk of 20% drop, say analysts
2014-10-26 23:28:39| Oil & Gas - Topix.net
The dramatic effect of falling oil prices on profits in the energy sector will be underlined this week as BP unveils third quarter earnings that could be as much as 20% lower than the same period last year. The cost of crude on global markets has plunged since June, reflecting faltering growth in the world economy, reduced fears about Middle East production levels and soaring US shale output.
