Traditional hardware release cycles are a thing of the past

Last week, we learned that the Ouya -- the $99 Kickstarted Android gaming console -- would get a yearly hardware refresh, which would be sold for the original price of $99. The Ouya isn't exactly a traditional game console, so a non-traditional release cycle isn't entirely mind-blowing. However, the Ouya's proposed release cycle is representative of release cycles in general, and how they haven't been traditional for some time.

Imagination Technologies unveils first hardware ray tracing graphics cards

Last fall, we examined real-time ray tracing performance in 3D modeling programs and discussed some of the promises and challenges surrounding the technology. At the time, there weren't any hardware ray tracers on the market. That's about to change. Imagination Technologies, the design firm behind the popular PowerVR GPUs that power a number of modern smartphones and tablets, is bringing two ray tracing cards to market.

Microsoft reports record revenue thanks to Windows 8, but is still dwarfed by Apples hardware hegemony

Hot the heels of Apple's record breaking quarter, Microsoft (MSFT) has broken its own revenue record and raked in $21.5 billion in Q2 2013 (calendar Q4 2012). Revenue was only up 3% on the same period last year, though, and profits at $6.4 billion were actually down 4%. Apple's profits, by comparison, were up 13.5%.

Microsoft may invest $3 billion in Dell, massively expanding its hardware operation

New mutterings suggest that Microsoft could invest up to $3B in Dell if the latter chooses to go private. Such a move would fundamentally change the entire PC industry and could pit Microsoft directly against the OEM partners it relies upon to move Windows 8.
