2016-03-30 17:00:39| Extremetech

New research into a Bronze Age battle site has uncovered signs of a massive conflict between two opposing sides -- far more than the sporadic raiding or tribal conflicts thought to occur in the area.

Severe coral bleaching is damaging huge swaths of the Great Barrier Reef, scientists say

2016-03-30 15:08:08| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Washington Post: Scientists have declared that key portions of the Great Barrier Reef -- over a thousand miles long and the largest living structure on the planet, according to Australias Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority -- are now seeing the worst coral bleaching in recorded history. Were seeing very severe bleaching in the northern part of the reef, said professor Terry Hughes of James Cook University, where he heads the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies....

Charged salts can extract specific central lanthanide elements, scientists show

2016-03-29 05:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

ScienceDaily: Rare earth elements are metals used in technologies from wind turbines and magnetic resonance imaging agents to industrial catalysts and high-definition televisions. Most are lanthanides, elements with atomic number from 57 to 71, lanthanum to lutetium, in the periodic table. The lanthanides predominantly form trivalent cations (with a net positive charge of three). Lanthanides have similar chemical properties, and the only significant physical characteristic that distinguishes them from each other...

Worst bleaching on record for Great Barrier Reef: Scientists say

2016-03-29 01:53:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Comment: Doropoulos said by studying the reproductive frenzy closely, scientists will be able to determine the best conditions by which coral reefs reproduce, something the CSIRO hopes will allow researchers to assist coral reefs such as the Ningaloo Marine Park and the world-famous Great Barrier Reef to better recover from natural disasters and global warming. Professor Terry Hughes, the convenor of the National Coral Bleaching Taskforce, says the World Heritage site is in the grip of the worst coral bleaching...

Worst bleaching on record for Great Barrier Reef: scientists

2016-03-28 21:57:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Agence France-Presse: Aerial surveys of Australia's Great Barrier Reef have revealed the worst bleaching on record in the icon's pristine north, scientists said Tuesday, with few corals escaping damage. Researchers said the view was devastating after surveying some 520 reefs via plane and helicopter between Cairns and the Torres Strait in the north of Queensland state. "This will change the Great Barrier Reef forever," Terry Hughes, an expert on coral reefs from James Cook University, told the Australian Broadcasting...
