The U.S. Department of Defense is looking into possible mishandling of bubonic plague and equine encephalitis samples at its laboratories, a Pentagon spokesman said Thursday. The new inquiry is part of an investigation into the mishandling of anthrax at Department of Defense labs, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said.

Health officials: Utah man in his 70s dies from plague

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it is the 12th case reported in the United States this year and fourth fatality. Dr. Paul Mead, a chief of epidemiology with the CDC, says the Utah case involved a man in his 70s, but he declined to release further details.

More delays plague New Jersey-to-New York trains

New Jersey Transit says trains into and out of Penn Station are operating on or close to schedule after earlier delays of up to 30 minutes. NJ Transit says the cause of the delay was a disabled Amtrak train in the tunnel that forced all trains to use one tube.

Banana producer Chiquita must face claims that it supported a terrorist organization that kidnapped and killed U.S. Christian missionaries in Colombia, a federal judge ruled. Cincinnati-based Chiquita Brands International, one of the largest banana producers and distributors in the world, owns farms in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras and Panama.
